Kaki King – Life Being What It Is
The most exciting thing about the day we shot these films, was not the films themselves, but the text that came through to Kaki’s phone confirming that she’d been nominated for a Best Original Score Golden Globe for another film; Into The Wild.
Kaki makes cinematic music, i knew that before i met her. What I didn’t know however, was that she was hilarious, super sharp and funny as hell – Kaki is a character. After a brief fumble for the right fingering on Life Being What It Is, Kaki nails it, and after a broken string, Kaki invents a new song. From the moment she sat down in the fading light, right through to the moment she indulged us in her “Impromptu String, String Breakage Song” – Kaki was stellar.
Kaki King: Impromptu String Breakage Song
Spontaneity reigned on the day. Breaking a string could have signaled the end of a day’s shooting, but Kaki played on. With two cameras we came up with this experimental Shoot The Player film – still one shot… just, two cameras and a lot of cuts…

What song was Kaki going to originally play after she played ‘Jessica’?
hmm. not sure, we hadn’t talked about it, the string broke right as she was tuning and no doubt thinking about the next one…
Simply amazing. I love Kaki’s music but there’s definitely a more endearing quality to it when she sings and these songs are perfect examples of that.
