It was 36 degrees. We were using loops and an amp. We were on someone else’s rooftop. We weren’t entirely welcome. The camera wasn’t ours. We didn’t know if this would work.
The Shoot The Player gods were definitely against us. It’s because we were breaking the rules; we were filming with amps. The gods where saying “We’re going to make it hard for you because you’re meant to film unplugged! We’re going to make it hot and tiresome and difficult and we’re cursing you with mean neighbours and conflict! Ahhh!” Which is exactly what happened. This shoot was hard. However, Pikelet (Evelyn) was patient and generous and we completed four songs, rode on crappy bikes (not ours) around the roof (not ours) played with a dog (not ours) and managed to capture her wonderful tunes against the windows and the skyline of downtown Sydney.
Though simple, Pikelet’s music isn’t really comparable. Layer upon layer of sound mix sweet melancholic vocals within intimate storylines, and coupled with her unpretentious persona, Pikelet’s infectious songs have a dreamy cinematic edge.
Pikelet: What’s Sown Will Be Reaped
Melbourne based Pikelet has a new album coming out in late 2008 (I think.)
