The first time we were meant to film Jack Ladder was at a chicken shop on Marrickville Road. Ladder was recording his new album at the time and the band had scheduled a lunch break at an iconic fluorescent dive. I had imagined, like a scene from a 70s musical, we would turn up and the whole shop would erupt in a spontaneous outburst of song \u2013 milkshakes would whiz down the counter, kids would twist on swivel stools, and Ladder would take center stage singing into his chiko roll. It didn\u2019t work out that way in the end and it was 6 months before I heard from Ladder again.<\/p>\n

The dog races was Ladder’s idea. Tucked behind the city and the sea, Wentworth Park was oddly perfect. The vast amphitheater flushed with lights and the dedicated regulars who ambled around made for an energetic and patriotic setting. Ladder mentioned he was moving to New York in a matter of weeks; what a send off.<\/p>\n
