These lovely kids are from the Blue Mountains and play an infectious, feel-good, upbeat style of indy rock. We made a number of videos with Belles, including one for “Coldest Heart” but Liam and Aiden’s beautiful harmonies were almost totally drowned out by the doomsday groan of planes overhead – the material was barely usable. (Oh the sweet sounds of the Inner West in Sydney…)
Meanwhile, Park Benches turned out to be a beautiful treat; unplanned, unrehearsed and totally spontaneous for musician and filmmaker.
As we followed the boys down behind the Annandale Hotel and into a series of squats, the eager faces of a few local kids caught our camera’s eye and we realised that we were being followed too. Lingering around the sheds and scraps of this mini wasteland, the kids provided a quiet and colourful impromptu audience to the band’s lively performance. Warm and energetic, Belles Will Ring pulled us in and with their sparkling songs and brought life to the rusted, indifferent landscape beneath the Sydney flight path.
Filming Belles Will Ring also lead us to discover Aiden’s new solo project, The Maple Trail. Shoot The Player films featuring The Maple Trail coming later in 2008.
